KENNER, La. (WVUE/Gray News) – The body of a 79-year-old man was recovered from a Louisiana lake nearly a week after he went missing while visting family for the holidays.
Police say a man’s body was recovered Tuesday morning after being found in Lake Pontchartrain near the Kenner boat launch. A spokesperson says the body appeared to have been in the water “for some time,” WVUE reports.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 79-year-old Charles Veith.
Veith, who lived in Houston, was visiting family in New Orleans for the holidays when he went missing. Police say he was last seen around 12:30 p.m. on Christmas Day in Metairie.
Veith left his family’s home to run an errand but did not return, according to Texas EquuSearch, a nonprofit volunteer search and recovery organization.
“It’s always a tragic situation when a friend, loved one or family member is located deceased, and it doesn’t make it any easier that it’s during the holiday season,” said Mike McCormick with Kenner Police. “So, our hearts go out to the family members.”
Police have not yet located Veith’s vehicle, which is described as a gray Ford Edge with a Texas Knights of Columbus license plate.
Police say foul play is not suspected at this time, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine Veith’s cause and manner of death.
In an unrelated incident, police say a truck went into the lake overnight in the same area.
