Mohave Valley, AZ — A 39-year-old Mohave Valley man was killed in an ATV rollover early Saturday morning.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 5:09 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, to the area north of Kingsley Street and Dike Road for a reported ATV crash.
When deputies arrived, they found the ATV overturned on its side. A male and female passenger told deputies a third man was trapped underneath the vehicle and was possibly deceased. Deputies located the man and confirmed he had died at the scene. He was later identified as Richard Anthony Cruz, 39, of Mohave Valley.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team responded and took over the investigation. Investigators learned the occupants had reportedly been consuming alcohol earlier in the evening before going on a nighttime ATV ride.
According to investigators, Cruz was driving the ATV when he accelerated, lost control, and the vehicle rolled over, ejecting both male occupants. The surviving male passenger was transported to a local hospital with injuries.
Investigators say alcohol, excessive speed, and the lack of occupant restraints appear to have been contributing factors in the crash.
