BULLHEAD CITY, AZ – A viral TikTok trend has hit two Bullhead City campuses, resulting in serious damage, a school evacuation, and ongoing investigations. The so-called “Chromebook Challenge” encourages students to short-circuit school-issued laptops — a stunt that may lead to both disciplinary action and criminal charges.
What We Know:
Incident at Bullhead City Middle School: On Thursday, a Chromebook began emitting smoke and burned internally in a classroom, leading to the evacuation of all students and staff. Emergency responders determined the damage was consistent with the TikTok challenge involving foreign objects being inserted into computer ports. No Injuries Reported: The evacuation was precautionary, and students returned to class about 30 minutes later. However, the affected classroom sustained significant damage and remains temporarily unusable. Additional Cases at Fox Creek Junior High: In the past two days, six Chromebooks were similarly vandalized at Fox Creek Junior High School. None of those caught fire, but students involved have been identified and questioned. Investigations Underway: Bullhead City Police, the Fire Department, and school officials are actively investigating. Students involved may face criminal charges. Under state law, parents could be held financially responsible for the damage.
What They’re Saying:
“These are not innocent pranks.”
