On Monday, December 1, at approximately 11:57 a.m., Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives responded to Fort Mohave Elementary School after being notified by school staff that a student had brought a weapon onto campus. Before law enforcement arrived, school administrators quickly removed the student from the classroom and secured the weapon.
The investigation revealed that an 8-year-old male student was in possession of a loaded handgun. The student reportedly showed the weapon to several classmates and handed it to another student. An uninvolved student overheard the information and immediately reported it to the principal, prompting swift action by school officials to prevent any injuries.
Deputies conducted interviews with the 8-year-old, the student who briefly possessed the weapon, and the child’s parent. During the investigation, it was discovered that a threat was allegedly made against a teacher while the firearm was in the student’s possession.
The 8-year-old was arrested and transported to the Mohave County Juvenile Detention Center on multiple felony charges, including:
- Misconduct Involving Weapons
- Disorderly Conduct
- Minor in Possession of a Firearm
- Interfering with an Educational Institution
- Threatening/Intimidating
At this time, authorities have not confirmed how the child obtained the firearm. The investigation remains ongoing, and possible charges against the second student involved are still under review.
This incident remains under active investigation by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office
