Suspect Arrested for 2nd Degree Murder
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office has arrested James Matthew Counts, 37, of Dolan Springs, in connection with the shooting death of a Dolan Springs man.
On Thursday, November 27, at approximately 9:46 PM, deputies responded to a property in the 12000 block of N. Round Island Rd. for a welfare check. The reporting party had returned home to find an adult male lying on the ground, possibly suffering from a gunshot wound.
Deputies arrived and located the victim, who had sustained at least one gunshot wound and showed no signs of life. Medical personnel confirmed the individual to be deceased. Detectives responded and took over the investigation.
The victim was identified as Timothy Wayne Terry, 52, of Dolan Springs, who had moved to the property approximately two weeks earlier. Several individuals live in separate structures on the property, and all reported that they were away at the time of the shooting.
The following day, detectives were headed back to the property for follow-up when they were notified that a male and female had arrived at the Kingman office to report an assault from the previous night. The male was identified as James Counts.
Counts told deputies that the female had walked to the property to retrieve personal items, and he had arrived shortly after with his minor child to pick her up. According to Counts, a physical confrontation occurred between himself and the victim. He claimed he fired a warning shot into the ground before firing toward Terry. Counts, the female, and the child then left the scene in a vehicle.
After completing interviews, detectives arrested James Matthew Counts for 2nd Degree Murder. He was booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility without incident.
The investigation remains ongoing.
