(Gray News) – An apparent global outage that affected Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads, has ended, according to their parent company Meta.

Thousands of Facebook users had issues with logging into their accounts Tuesday morning as outages were reported across the globe. Many reported being logged out and unable to log back in.

The outages were first reported on DownDetector at about 10:30 a.m. EST Tuesday. At its peak, about 519,988 users nationwide reported experiencing issues with Facebook. Instagram was also affected by the apparent outages with many Instagram users reporting issues with their feed not refreshing.

The issues appeared to be widespread, with countries such as the U.K., Japan and Brazil reporting problems.

Meta announced at 12:36 p.m. EST that they had recovered from the outage and that services had been restored. The company also apologized for any inconvenience the outage may have caused.

At this time, the cause of the outages is unknown.

According to the Associated Press, the outage comes days before a deadline for Big Tech companies to the European Union’s new Digital Markets Act. They reported that Meta would have to make changes in order to comply but it isn’t clear if the outage is connected to any preparations the company may be doing.

The Associated Press also reported a senior official with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said that they are not aware of any “specific election nexus nor any specific malicious cyberactivity nexus” related to the outage.
